The Art Of Being Positive!

Birds were twittering in the skies and the resonance of the leaves was comforting! While I peeped outside my windowpane, the emission of the sun gave me an intuition of the day being optimistic, encouraging and affirmative. I could enjoy the flora and fauna, the foliage and the blessedness of the atmosphere. I could listen to the wings flutter and saw a group of birds land on my bird feeder, skirmishing and struggling to peep and initiate eating their chow. WOW! What a sight and what a blend of beauty, exquisiteness and magnificence.

While sipping my coffee and looking for my television remote, I could sense the squirrels on my deck attempting to leap towards the birds, which petrified them and they flew away tweeting all the way.
I switch on the television and toggling between FOX, CNN, NBC – I get to ABC and listen in to the Iraq atrocities, updates on Jackson trial, the gigantic blaze in Highland MI, Pistons losing to Pacers and finally…the advertisements on Coors Light and Auto Glass Manufacturers. I switch off the television – get up from my love seat - finish off my coffee – remove the coffee stain from the table – take a momentary look on the tree just outside my deck which has been standing tall, firm and unyielding since the last 6 years irrespective of the four seasons in Michigan.

This is not my archetypal day (a couple of hours…may be) but this happens with each and every individual who experiences not only the passive, negative and downbeat sides of his/her life but the optimistic, affirmative and upbeat phases also.

I have learnt the art of being positive in the last 10 years as, Positive thinking won't let you do anything but it will let you do everything better than negative thinking will.

Good description of the idyllic settings around you, but my question is if being positive is a state of mind or the environment around you ? Like the King in Scotland or wherever was trapped in a castle for 8 or 9 years and saw a spider trying to build its web, which gave him the needed inertia to wage a war to regain his kingdom. Or is it that for someone positive, even the most morose of surroundings seems just that serene and beautiful ?

Dear Sourin,
All of our feelings, beliefs and knowledge are based on our internal thoughts, both conscious and subconscious. We are in control, whether we know it or not.

We can be positive or negative, enthusiastic or dull, active or passive.

The biggest difference between people is their attitudes. For some, learning is enjoyable and exciting. For others, learning is a drudgery. For many, learning is just okay, something required on the road to a job.

Our present attitudes are habits, built from the feedback of parents, friends, society and self, that form our self-image and our world-image.These attitudes are maintained by the inner conversations we constantly have with ourselves, both consciously and subconsciously.

The first step in changing our attitudes is to change our inner conversations.

One approach is called the three C's: Commitment, Control and Challenge.

Commitment
Make a positive commitment to yourself, to learning, work, family, friends, nature, and other worthwhile causes. Praise yourself and others. Dream of success. Be enthusiastic.

Control
Keep your mind focused on important things. Set goals and priorities for what you think and do. Visualize to practice your actions. Develop a strategy for dealing with problems. Learn to relax. Enjoy successes. Be honest with yourself.

Challenge
Be courageous. Change and improve each day. Do your best and don't look back. See learning and change as opportunities. Try new things. Consider several options. Meet new people. Ask lots of questions. Keep track of your mental and physical health. Be optimistic.

Studies show that people with these characteristics are winners in good times and survivors in hard times.

Commitment, control and challenge help build self-esteem and promote positive thinking. Here are some other suggestions.

Let me share the following 7 suggestions for building positive attitude with you I just saw while surfing...
1. In every class, look for positive people to associate with.
2.In every lecture, look for one more interesting idea.
3. In every chapter, find one more concept important to you.
4. With every friend, explain a new idea you've just learned.
5. With every teacher, ask a question.
6. With yourself, keep a list of your goals, positive thoughts and actions.

Remember, you are what you think, you feel what you want.

Thx,
Anshul

You are like Yoda man, full of wise things to say. This paragraph was excellent and I have read and reread this many times to fully imbibe the depth pf your musings. Really well said, and I couldnt agree more.
However you cannot neglect the biggest factor of them all in life coupled with Atiitude and hardword, and that is chance or luck. I'm sure lots of people would have had good attitudes at Nuremberg but would have still got gassed to death. Same goes for the Tsunami victims. You think nature would have differenciated between someone with a good attitude and someone with not ?

No Sourin!
Nature would have definitely not changed with the attitude of a person - we do not have any control on nature and the calamaties. Whatever happened has happened and no one could change it...but, we need to move forward, think ahead and act accordingly & IN ORDER TO ACT ACCORDINGLY WE NEED TO BE POSITIVE, RATIONAL AND LOOK INTO THE FUTURE RATHER THAN PONDERING OVER THE MISHAPS OCCURED IN THE PAST.

Life still goes on - all of us have responsibilities and we need to take two steps forward - as compared to a person w/passive attitude whose grey cells might not work in a prolific and constructive manner.

I hope I'm able to convey my thoughts!

Thx,
Anshul
